Feeling awkward when the discussion leader asks what the author is trying to say?
Not sure what theme, symbolism, and other literary terms mean?
I've always loved to write. But reading? I hated it.
Not because I didn't understand the words—
but because every time my literature teacher asked,
"What is the author saying?"
I had no idea!
But now, as an author, I figured it out because
there's a reading-writing connection...
My first term at college, I had to complete a 1-credit library research course, an independent study that taught me to use the university's library system.
The librarians provided worksheets for collecting citation information, but at some point I realized that although the worksheets were helpful, they were incomplete.
I hated going back the library to find the missing information!
When I was a grad student teaching research writing for the Department of Rhetoric, I recreated those worksheets and taught students how to use them while they completed their literature review and other writing assignments.
And given the nerd that I am, I had the students use the style guide specific to their major, so I had to learn MLA, APA, Chicago, and CBE!
Now as a believer, I incorporate God into every writing process, my own as well as every class that I teach.
He wants us to be successful, and He gives wisdom to all who ask!
