Mock Trial
Grace Hopper
In Mock Trial, one of the people who died is named Grace. They gave her the last name Hopper. Because I tutored an Essentials student who wrote her Faces of History paper on Grace Hopper, I now know that this was a nod to Admiral Grace Hopper, who was a computer scientist who pioneered computer programming.
Hopper was one of the programming team who found a bug in the computer--literally a moth. That's why we call problems "computer bugs."
Hopper changed the numbers to English commands so that programming was more like language.
Hopper created parts of computer programs and figured out how to store them in the computer so that her programs could access them when needed rather than her having to rewrite the same code over and over.
and so much more!
“A ship in port is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.”
“Manage things. Lead people.”
“Leadership is a two-way street, loyalty up and loyalty down. Respect for one’s superiors; care for one’s crew.”
“The only phrase I’ve ever disliked is, ‘Why, we’ve always done it that way.’ I always tell young people, ‘Go ahead and do it. You can always apologize later.'”
